For our friends here, a cadaka is something you give back to God. This morning Eliana and I saw a few guys saw through the lock on the playground and carry in an enormous deg (basically a big pot) that would sit on top of a wood stove thingy. They then proceeded to make a enormous amount of osh (the local rice dish) and share it with all the neighbors. We ended up with a plate and they were very excited to share. I'm not sure why they were doing it, maybe in honor of a dead relative, but they were very generous.
I wish you could have seen how big the deg was. It was maybe three feet across! I think Eliana and three of her friends could have fit in there. It was crazy! Just a fun little thing about life here. What person in the US would make enough food to feed their whole apartment building!? Different worlds!
