As many of you know, this weekend we went on a little road trip. Well, in order to get to our destination we had to take a drive through the mountains, which are a little higher than the mountains where I grew up. We topped out at around 9,200 feet before we started our descent into the valley where our friends live.
There was still a lot of snow on the mountains and we drove through a lot of snow walls where they'd had to cut through the snow from avalanches in order to make a path through the road.
There are several avalanche tunnels on the road which were built in spots that are prone to avalanches to catch the snow and keep the road open. Most of these tunnels were in fact covered with snow.
The biggest tunnel you drive through is about 3 miles long, dark, wet and full of potholes. On the way there we had to sit and wait for 1.5 hours while a line of big trucks came through because we couldn't fit two cars at the same time. It was a little stressful being stuck in a tunnel for that long, but we made it. Fortunately on the way back we went straight through without having to stop.
The whole trip is only about 140 miles but it takes about 5.5 hours to drive. Crazy! There are about 3 hours of bad, bumpy road and 2.5 hours of good, smooth road. The scenery along the way is amazing though and having time with our friends was totally worth it. You can't begin to imagine the majesty of these mountains until you see them. It's really like you are in a movie. And then having time with sweet friends to relax and hang out...like I said, definitely worth it.
Here are some pictures. You cannot capture the beauty on film but at least you can get an idea. If you ever want to come visit and see everything in person, come on down! It's totally worth it!
